Concorde Test Flight Suit and Helmet

SOLD

Ask people what they associate with Concorde and many will refer to the pampered luxury of inflight service. For the early pioneers of Concorde things were very different however . Designed to fly to the edge of space the early test pilots had to be equipped very differently.

The pressurised flying suit and helmet offered for sale here are complete with the original oxygen bottle and breathing apparatus and are marked with an inspection date of May 1969—one month before the maiden British Concorde flight. These were standard issue for pilots on those early test flights. Exactly which test pilot wore these on which flight cannot be confirmed. When the late Brian Trubshaw (British chief Concorde test pilot) passed these items on to their current owner at the end of the Concorde Test Programme he described his maiden flight on Concorde as “… a flight into the unknown” and certainly these evocative items from those historic flights are a powerful reminder of the boldness and bravery required when Concorde first took to the skies.
